Announcements: M³C X The ONE Campaign join forces to end the pandemic

Updated: Aug 11

Johannesburg, South Africa - November 30, 2021 - M³C's Chief Content Creator, Thomas Mofolo has been appointed as the new 'Africa Digital & Social Media Consultant' for The One Campaign's 2022 surge campaigns.

The mandate for this project is to support The ONE Campaign in Africa via collaborations with its content, digital Innovation and insight teams, to help manage the ONE.org/Africa website, and the Africa team’s social media channels to ensure they remain an effective tool in support of ONE’s campaigning and advocacy work in the region.

ONE is a global advocacy organisation campaigning to end extreme poverty and preventable diseases by 2030, so that everyone, everywhere can lead a life of dignity and opportunity. ONE was founded in 2004 by American attorney Bobby Shriver and U2's frontman Bono along with a coalition of 11 non-profit humanitarian and advocacy organisations.

The success of this appointment was mainly predicated on Mr. Mofolo's past experience with Global Citizen, where he served as the digital communications officer for their #Mandela100 campaign back in 2018/19. Similarly to Global Citizen, ONE describes its organisation as a movement, and shares a similar mission to champion the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals with a vision to end extreme poverty through advocacy by 2030.

ONE works with volunteer campaigners in different markets to raise awareness and lobby governments to fight extreme poverty and preventable disease.

The 'Africa Digital & Social Media Consultant' will spearhead the entire content creation process specially geared towards ONE's new surge campaign to promote vaccination against the Corona Virus. This appointment couldn't be more timely given the recent news of a new variant of the virus which has been dubbed 'Omicron'. Several Southern African countries were recently imposed with travel restriction bans by the US and other countries due to this new variant, however, this decision has been viewed by many as unjustified because Omicron was also detected in several other countries outside Africa.

The focus of ONE's efforts for this new surge campaign which will last 10 months will also be to boost economic recovery. Mr. Mofolo will be working closely with ONE's Africa Campaigns Director, Sonia Kwami to leverage digital media for mobilising Africans across the continent to play an active role in bringing an end to the pandemic. ONE uses a number of highly visible methods to reach out to the general public, promote its message, and encourage advocacy actions. ONE does not ask for public donations, stating: "We're not asking for your money. We're asking for your voice."

As part of their fight to end the pandemic ONE has already launched a series of campaigns this year including one in collaboration with British studio 'Titmouse' to raise awareness of worldwide inequities in vaccine access. The campaign titled 'Pandemica' comprised of an animated series created to raise awareness of the importance of global vaccine access in ending the pandemic. The series features characters voiced by Patrick Adams, Samuel Arnold, Bono, Connie Britton, Penélope Cruz, Meg Donnelly, Danai Gurira, Nick Kroll, Laura Marano, Kumail Nanjiani, David Oyelowo, Phoebe Robinson, Michael Sheen, Wanda Sykes, and Calum Worthy.

Additional information about ONE’s Pandemica initiative is available here. All episodes of Pandemica are available here.
